Representatives of the SEENPM member organizations gathered in Belgrade on 3 April for an annual meeting of the network’s General Assembly. The event took place against the backdrop of a deteriorating media and freedom of expression situation in many countries of Central and South East Europe. Along with dealing with a number of statutory issues, the participants considered possible network-wide actions to counter the negative trends affecting media integrity.

Each member representative briefly presented current activities of their organization, with a wide range of research, monitoring, advocacy and journalism training and production projects and initiatives highlighted.

SEENPM  was created in February 2000 with the aim to raise journalism standards, improve media environment on the national and regional levels, encourage cooperation among media professionals, and in this way, to contribute to the mutual understanding and stability in SEE region.

Members: SEENPM unites 18 media centers and institutes from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Main activities:

Education: trainings, courses and study trips in combination with work in filed practise designed for journalists and other media workers.
Research: cross-border research projects, comparative analyses, etc. followed by exchanging of information, media experts, journalists, etc.
Publishing: media-related research publications, journalism manuals and other publications that contribute to enhancing regional awareness of professional standards and good practice in the field of media.

The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) is a regional non-governmental network of editors, media experts and leading journalists from South East Europe. SEEMO was founded in October 2000 in Zagreb, Croatia, by a group of leading editors-in-chief, media executives and professors of journalism and communications from South East Europe with financial support of the International Press Institute (IPI).

One of SEEMO’s main activities is protecting press freedom by helping journalists and media professionals in South East Europe.

Established in 1996, in Paris, Internews International, is currently made up of 13 Full Member Organizations and 17 Affiliated Members working together to support freedom of expression around the world and has been in operational relations with UNESCO since june of 2002.
